However, the true effectiveness of an agile practitioner does not come simply through strict adherence to these practices. The true value of an agile practitioner lies in their ability to adapt methods and techniques to the specific needs of their team and the project at hand .


The Role of an Agile Practitioner


An agile practitioner, or a practitioner of agile methods, is often seen as a leader or facilitator within a team. Their main role is to ensure that the project proceeds efficiently, fostering effective collaboration and ensuring that everyone is aligned with the project objectives. However, this role goes far beyond simply applying pre-defined rules; it requires a critical and adaptive look at the practices adopted.

Following agile methodologies “ by the book ” may seem like a guarantee of success, but this approach often ignores the unique variables of each project. Each team has its own peculiarities, each project its own specific challenges, and each context its own unique demands. Therefore, rigidity in applying any methodology can end up being more of an obstacle than a facilitator.


For example, Scrum, one of the most popular agile frameworks, suggests development cycles (sprints) of two to four weeks. However, if a team is faced with a project that requires faster feedback or if the nature of the work is unpredictable, the agile practitioner may choose to adapt the sprint lengths to better suit the needs of the project. They may even change the team’s agile process to suit.


The Vanity of Agile Practices


There is also the issue of "vanity" in agile practices. In some cases, adopting agile methods can become a kind of status symbol, where the focus is more on being able to say that one is following agile methods than on actually obtaining the benefits of these practices. This attachment can prevent one from seeing other solutions that are possibly more appropriate for a given problem.


The real challenge and, at the same time, the true value of an agile practitioner lies in their ability to be flexible. This involves adjusting agile practices to best fit the team dynamics and project requirements, always with the goal of facilitating the process and achieving the desired results. This flexibility does not mean abandoning agile principles, but adapting them to maximize their effectiveness.


Adopting a solution-oriented approach means, in practice, understanding that tools and methods are means to an end, not the end in themselves. It means having the ability to change the course of action when circumstances require it and finding new ways to solve problems, always with an eye on the end goal.


In short, while agile theory and practices provide an excellent guide to managing projects effectively, the heart of agility lies in adaptability. The most valued agile practitioner is not the one who simply follows the manual, but the one who knows when and how to make necessary adjustments , ensuring that the team does not just follow a set of rules, but actually thrives and achieves its goals effectively. After all, adaptability is the essence of agility.
